ABOUT ART

This page is about getting started, being inspired, and what it takes to become an artist.

Many people have asked me when did I first started in drawing or how did I get into art,
well I would simply tell them- "When I was very young."
Then they would give me the 'that-figures' look and I would quickly add-
"...But I didn't take it seriously until the end of my senior year in high school."
This gets their attention again because I know that these people are searching for some kind of hope or inspiration in getting started themselves.

Also another question is- Do you need TALENT to draw well?
I tell them- "Talent helps, but DETERMINATION will get you further."
Those who have a passion for it will grow. Also, drawing is a never-ending learning lesson.
There is so much to draw, and so many different 'STYLES' out there that no one can master it all.

So how do you get started and what does it take?
First, ask yourself if you ENJOY it. That's the key!
Don't worry about your age or not being good enough- that will all come later. Do you find yourself constantly doodeling and then later looking back at it saying- "Yeah, that's cool.", or "Maybe I can do better next time?" You appreciate your creation and want to do more. That's all it takes to start out.

I always tell new and serious beginners- "If you're really serious about getting into drawing- you gotta eat, drink, and sleep drawing!" Get involved with other artists or organizations, surround yourself with books, magazines and videos for inspiration, immitate your favorite artist then later add in your personal touch (making it your own 'STYLE'). Make a commitment to keep going, believe in yourself, and always keep drawing (carry your sketch pad around), and finally- Never give up!!!

*True story: I struggled at first, felt a little behind from the rest of the class at Cal-Arts. I was even told from a fellow artist that I was not going to make it in the animation business! Don't ever stop believing in yourself. Work hard at it and you too, will become in what you believe. -TAo!

Art Schools -vs- Self Taught:
Both are good. Again, it's the DETERMINATION that gets you further in life!
I've seen artists who are really good and they didn't or couldn't afford going to an art school. However, reading from books isn't enough- you need to interact with other artists and get feedback from others. I've probably learned more from the students at Cal-Arts than the teachers themselves.

I think the best way to learn is to ask questions from artists you admire- 'Pick their brains' so to speak. And not just from one artist- but as many as possible. (If they're dead, read their bios or books.) Surround yourself with the artwork you like and take time to study them. It's okay to 'copy' at first, but don't be afraid to try something different on your own.

So if you get into an art college and don't find an interest in it- What's the point? Also if you're trying to be cheap by not going to school- you might be missing out from other artists. If you can afford it- go for it. If you can't- do your best. Art is a great investment. Also in art, the only thing stopping you... is you! -TAo!
