First, start out with
an IDEA, CONCEPT, or SUBJECT MATTER
-who is it for: age, gender, race, target audience?
-is is humorous or serious?
-what's the story, message, or statement?
-what's the look: stylized or trendy, color or black & white, computer
aided or traditional?
Next, do you have enough
INFO or REFERENCES?
-books, magazines, videos/DVDs, photo stills, etc.
-build up your picture library for prensent and future use!
Think about COMPOSITION and THUMBNAILS
-dramatic staging, point of view.
-usage of lighting, colors, and tonals.
-nice readable silhouette and negative spaces.
-where and what is the focus, your placement?
How about the STYLE
-this includes line thickness and sharpness of
angles
-simplicity vs lots of details (also cartoony vs realistic)
Usage of CHARACTERS in
a drawing
-must have dynamic pose, attitude, and facial
expression
-readable silhouette and negative spaces
-help from costume and props
-interaction with other characters or background
COLORS, TEXTURES, and
the FINISHED LOOK
-type of medium: markers, color pencils, oils,
photoshop, etc.
-use colors to set the mood or direct your focus
Also think of: CONTRAST,
SIMILARITIES, and OPPOSITS
A good drawing can evoke the audience's emotions: angry, sad, laughter,
etc.
Don't let a small section of your drawing ruin the whole entire piece.
Miscellaneous things
to watch out for:
-watch out for little lines that can make a big difference
-watch out for secondary actions in movement - cause and affect-
examples: direction of hair flowing, jaw stretch, interaction of push
and pull,
and what causes something to react that way.
Well, that's it for this
page. -TAo!
